Malvern's Business Courses

The Malvern House Academy offers a range of pre-university preparatory courses and business related qualifications.



University Foundation Course with a focus on business or tourism

The Malvern House Foundation Course is designed to prepare students for entry into a British university to study at the undergraduate level. Students attend up to 30 hours of class per week.

Who is it for?

  • Students who have completed secondary education in their country
  • Students who want to attend a UK university
  • Students who want to study a business or tourism related course
  • Students who have a minimum IELTS 5.0 for the 9 month course and IELTS 5.5 for the 6 month course

Syllabus

The course is made up of the following components:

  • Study Skills (15 hours a week): Students will concentrate on the basic skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. They will practise these skills in an academic environment, reading academic text, writing formal essays, listening to lectures and taking notes. They will also learn research methods.
  • Business Communication (4.5 hours a week): Students will be introduced to the basics of business communication, its means and methods. Students will put these skills into practise in various ways including case studies, presentations and investigations.
  • Integrated Skills (3 hours a week): This module brings together the skills developed in the rest of the course in practical and task based ways. Students will undertake research and produce essays and presentations in subject of interest to them.
  • Critical Thinking (3 hours a week): This module will introduce students to the different ways of reading, analysing and understanding texts from a variety of different sources and considering them critically rather than accepting what is put before them.
  • Cultural Studies (1.5 hours a week): The aim of this module is to acquaint students with the British way of life. This will cover not only its institutions and political and economic background but also its attitudes and values.
  • Travel and Tourism (optional): This module provides an overview of the tourism industry and introduces the students to the language of tourism.
  • IELTS (optional): Students will complete a course of IELTS over a three month period if their IELTS score is below 6.0.

What next?

Students can apply for an undergraduate course (BA/BSc) at a UK university. Acceptance onto a university course is subject to the entrance requirements of individual universities.



University Pre-Masters Course with a focus on business or tourism

The Malvern House Pre-Masters Course is designed to prepare students for entry into a British university to study at the graduate level. What distinguishes the Pre-Masters from the Foundation course is the maturity of the students, their level of subject knowledge and the expectations of the teaching staff. Students attend up to 30 hours of class per week.

This programme has been developed with guidance from the University of Leeds.

Start Dates: Students can join either on 7 January 2009 for the 6 month course or 30 March 2009 for the 3 month course. Students who join in March are expected to have a higher level of English.

Who is it for?

  • Students who have completed an undergraduate degree in their country
  • Students who want to attend a Masters at a UK university
  • Students who want to study a business or tourism related course
  • Students who have a minimum IELTS 5.5 for the 6 month course and IELTS 6.0 for the 3 month course.

Syllabus

  • Business (4.5 hours a week): Students will study Human Resource Management, Accounting, Economics, Business Communication, Marketing and Management. They will undertake case studies and conduct research into their chosen areas.
  • Integrated Skills (3 hours a week): This module brings together the skills developed in the rest of the course in practical and task based ways. Students will undertake research and produce essays and presentations in subject of interest to them.
  • Critical Thinking (3 hours a week): This module will introduce students to the different ways of reading, analysing and understanding texts from a variety of different sources and considering them critically rather than accepting what is put before them.

What next?

Students can apply to an MBA or business-related Masters course at a UK university. Acceptance onto a university course is subject to the entrance requirements of individual universities or business schools. Universities that offer MBA courses usually expect students to have several relevant years of work experience.

Malvern House Business Certificate

Our specially designed 12 week course introduces students to the practical and theoretical skills of business management. While extremely valuable in its own right, the Malvern House Business Certificate also provides a gateway to our ABE Diploma courses. ABE Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas are internationally recognised and accepted by leading British Universities as a component of course entry requirements.

After completing the Malvern House Business Certificate, students can specialise in Business Management or Travel, Tourism and Hospitality.

Who is it for?

  • Students with Upper-Intermediate level English
  • Students interested in studying basic business skills
  • Students preparing to go on to further study

Syllabus

Students will study 4 modules during the course. They will be tested in each area at the end of the course.

Introduction to Business:
Students will gain an understanding of business environments, structures and the purpose of business activity. Practical business problems will be addressed through the application of business theory.

Introduction to Quantitative Methods:
This module will introduce numeracy, basic calculations and algebra. Students will also be taught to present information in graphical form and to analyse statistical data.

Introduction to Accountancy:
Students will acquire basic knowledge of accountancy. The financial aspects of companies will be addressed and students will be prepared to progress onto more complex accountancy courses.

Introduction to Business Communication:
The first-step in communicating effectively in a range of business situations and environments. Topics includes presentations, business correspondence and use of new technology.

What next?

Successful completion of the Malvern House Certificate entitles students to progress either onto ABE Diploma in Business Management or onto ABE Diploma in Travel, Tourism and Hospitality.
